RGB arcade button hack

This is just a small hack, but still took me a weekend to solder 16 of them.
I wanted some new LED arcade button for my machine, but could only find single colour ones.
Soooo I bought a bunch of white ones and removed the existing LED and replaced it with RGBs. Sounds simple enough, but as the buttons were designed to house a single colour LED it only had 2 outputs when the new LEDs needed 4.

More to come

adjustable sculpting table

After many hours hunched over my desk working on sculpts, and having read Philippe Faraut books on portraiture, I decided I needed a proper working table. I also knew that I would have trouble finding a suitable table as Im pretty tall, so...
This is built with a rotational table top and adjustable height. Its also hinged, so relatively easy to store away.

Time flies

its been a while since Ive posted. Its been a busy time these last couple of months but I have still had time to work on a couple of personal projects... just not to post them... ok, pretty lame excuse.
heres a couple for now.
Some fiberglass casts of sculpts I did a couple of months ago.

The second one cracked... and then I dropped it, which didnt help. Will recast soon(ish)

Baby head

Having been working in Adelaide for the last 2 months Ive had a little time recently to do a little sculpting.

Bought myself a block of Chavant and a bag of cheap tools... which are now all broken (note to self, dont buy cheap tools)

Frightened ram man- Painting experiment.

I like the idea of monsters being afraid...
what is it they always say about snakes? "They are more afraid of you than you are of them".
Anyway, big nods to Aris Kolokontis whose work Im a big fan of. He kindly shared some of his painting work flow which I totally imitated (down to the little pupils). I found it to be a great technique, though my first attempt was a little messy. I will certainly be incorporating these techniques in future work... without so blatantly ripping off his style:) It is a good way to learn. Thanks Aris.
You can see his stuff here.

Quite like some of these darker shots.

How to make an Arcade in 10 (not so) easy steps...

Well, actually its not even finished yet, but it'll have to do for now as Im traveling interstate for a few months for a job.
Nods to this guys console panel which inspired parts of my final design, mixed with the original Defender marqee art, which Ive always loved... and the colour blue.
If I have time Ill hook up the LED 'coin' buttons on the console in the next day or so and maybe find a lower wattage for the marquee lamp.
The side panel art will have to wait. I did do a quick mock up of an idea Ive been toying with, I'll add it at the bottom.

The cab 'open'. Keyboard access draw, cupboards and the under the hood.

Some more shots of a different 'splatter' artwork I tried out... which I decided looked a little too "Hypercolour"... does anyone remember Hypercolour T-Shirts?

Close up of the final artwork.
...and lastly, a mock up. I found an image of graffiti art I liked and Photoshopped it. Not my work, I love it though. Might be the next project... learn how to paint...

Cab Update #9 - Wiring the console

Ok, at last, after heaps of issues printing (office works were obsessed with scaling down and over trimming the prints!) Its done. To get to the wiring and setup process, and even adding the buttons the console panel art had to be finished. Now it has, all is assembled.
But Ill show it a little later.

For now here is the wiring. Easier than it looks. I followed this guys instruction, but as long as you know whats Ground and whats positive you cant really go wrong.
2nd photo is on the I-PAC keyboard encoder.

Cab Update #8... yes more

Ive been looking for suitable door knobs for the bottom of the cab when i had an epiphany and decided to make my own. Just a little modification and remold and then cast in metal alloy. After a bit of sanding Im pretty happy.
Ive also cut and sanded the perspex marquee window and console top... a little scary but I found using a hole cutter was fine, although you wouldnt want to take the protective wrap off before doing this. I also made a little bracket to mount a lamp for the marquee and Ive done the marquee and console designs, but I ll show this once Ive printed and installed them... tomorrow.

Getting close now

Cab Update #7

Did some detailing today. Including speaker grills (top and bottom) and an aluminum bezel support (just to break up all that black) which sits between the bezel and the console.
I also did all the wiring at the back but have yet to install power buttons and LEDs. Considering dumping the case and building something of my own to make space and lessen weight, but this will do in the meantime.

Cab Update #6

Not wired up, just testing out the PC. It has definitely been the biggest headache, most of these parts are off the street and I had no idea what was working, compatible or obsolete. Its had taken a couple of weeks just in itself for me to test it and build, with many fails along the way.
It seems to be holding up for the moment. If it stays that way Ill spend some money on better RAM.

Cab Update #5

Another little Cab update. Bezel is done, took a bit of cleaning up, but is looking good so far. I also repainted the Console, Im probably going to stick art work on this later down the track and whack perspex on top but its nice in the meantime.
Please take note of the state of my study...
